The LNP needs to do better.

We call on the Crisafulli Queensland Government to reverse its decision to pause hormone therapy for new patients.

Queenslanders deserve world-class healthcare delivered with compassion, dignity, and respect, regardless of gender. The Crisafulli LNP Government’s decision to suspend this essential care disproportionately impacts some of our most vulnerable: transgender and gender-diverse young people.

Healthcare decisions should be made between individuals, their families, and qualified medical professionals not politicians. Pausing access to hormone therapy undermines this fundamental principle.

We acknowledge the importance of safety and best practice in clinical care and support ongoing reviews into service delivery. However, the current pause unnecessarily delays care and creates distress for families already navigating a complex and deeply personal journey.

Transgender and gender-diverse youth are at significantly higher risk of mental health challenges. Studies indicate that nearly 50% of trans young people in Australia have attempted suicide, and 75% have been diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety. Access to gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy, has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, increase life satisfaction, and reduce suicidal ideation.

We urge the Government to:

• Immediately reverse the pause on hormone therapy for new patients

• Respect the clinical expertise of healthcare providers

• Ensure all Queenslanders have access to the care they need, free from political interference

Young people deserve support not delays and the pause by the LNP Crisafulli Government is simply not good enough.
